India-Bangladesh Ties: Envoy Hopes Tarique Rahman Will Visit India ‘Much Sooner’

India and Bangladesh can resolve their differences through talks, Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi said as uncertainty continued over Tarique Rahman’s India visit amid a fresh row over Sheikh Hasina.

Trivedi said on Sunday that the two neighbours had challenges but that was normal between two sovereign countries. “Issues can only be sorted out by meeting,” he said, adding that he was hopeful Rahman’s visit would happen “much sooner”.

His remarks came as Dhaka said it had not yet decided whether Rahman would attend the BRICS summit in New Delhi on September 12 and 13. India has invited Rahman both for a bilateral visit and as a special guest at the summit.

The main hurdle is Sheikh Hasina’s extradition. Dhaka wants India to hand over the former prime minister, who fled to India after her government was removed in 2024. Hasina was sentenced to death in absentia in November 2025. She has rejected the case as politically motivated. India has said the extradition request is being examined under its laws.

Dhaka is also seeking an assurance that Hasina will not be allowed to carry out political activities from India. Bangladeshi officials say her statements could affect the political situation at home. Reports say India has given some assurance, but Dhaka wants a fuller commitment before confirming Rahman’s visit.

The dispute grew after Hasina addressed journalists from New Delhi on August 5 and said she planned to return to Bangladesh in December. Dhaka called the event an affront to its sovereignty. India said it had no role in the media event and did not endorse her remarks.

Rahman and Trivedi have already met in Dhaka. Officials also discussed the extradition request and the return of other suspects wanted in Bangladesh.

Trivedi said India and Bangladesh should respect each other’s interests and work towards a “golden period” in ties. For now, however, the Hasina issue remains central to whether Rahman makes his first visit to India as prime minister.
