India, Austria Strengthen Strategic Ties with Focus on Innovation and Green Growth

In a significant step towards strengthening bilateral relations, Droupadi Murmu hosted Christian Stocker at Rashtrapati Bhavan, marking his first official visit to India. The meeting underscored the growing depth of India–Austria ties, rooted in shared commitments to democracy , rule of law , and mutual cooperation across emerging global priorities.

Welcoming the Austrian Chancellor, the President highlighted the longstanding friendship between the two nations and noted that recent engagements have injected new energy into the partnership. She recalled the importance of Narendra Modi’s visit to Austria, which coincided with 75 years of diplomatic relations and paved the way for expanded collaboration in areas such as innovation , renewable energy , hydrogen , water management , waste management , and artificial intelligence .

A key highlight of the discussions was the potential impact of the recently concluded India–EU Free Trade Agreement , which is expected to significantly boost trade and investment between the two countries. President Murmu expressed confidence that the agreement would open new avenues for Austrian businesses to expand their presence in India, particularly in high-growth sectors like semiconductors , green energy , and AI . She emphasized that both nations, as knowledge-based economies , are well-positioned to deepen cooperation in science , technology , and innovation-driven industries .

The President also spotlighted India’s rapidly expanding start-up ecosystem , one of the largest in the world, and welcomed the progress of the India–Austria Start-up Bridge , launched in 2024. The initiative has been instrumental in fostering connections between entrepreneurs, enabling collaborative innovation, and promoting cross-border investments, thereby strengthening economic ties at the grassroots level.

The meeting reflected a broader strategic alignment, with Austria emerging as a key European partner for India in advanced technologies and sustainable development. As global economies increasingly pivot towards digital transformation and climate-conscious growth, both countries are seeking to leverage each other’s strengths to build resilient and future-ready partnerships.
