India Army opens fertility clinic in Arunachal’s border district

The Indian Army has established an infertility treatment facility in Arunachal Pradesh ’s West Kameng district , strengthening access to specialised reproductive healthcare in one of the state’s remote border regions.

The intrauterine insemination centre, inaugurated at Tenga , will cater to both civilians and service personnel from West Kameng and adjoining districts. While Arunachal Pradesh already has fertility services in urban centres such as Itanagar and Naharlagun , this is the first time such a facility has been made available in West Kameng, where couples earlier had to travel long distances for treatment.

Defence spokesperson Lt Col Mahendra Rawat said the centre marks a major advancement in infertility care in border areas with limited medical infrastructure. Officials explained that the initiative was driven by the unique challenges faced by families in forward and high altitude postings, including frequent transfers, difficult terrain, and restricted access to specialised healthcare.

The centre will use intrauterine insemination , a medically established assisted reproductive technique in which prepared sperm is placed directly into the uterus during ovulation to improve chances of conception. The facility is also equipped for basic fertility assessments, ovulation tracking, and hormonal evaluations, allowing early diagnosis and timely intervention.

By strengthening medical infrastructure in remote regions, the Indian Army continues to extend its role beyond security, serving as a crucial support system for local communities and personnel stationed in Arunachal Pradesh.
