India–Tanzania relations have evolved from historical maritime links and shared anti-colonial solidarity into a dynamic strategic partnership , reflecting deepening engagement between the two nations. India established its diplomatic presence in Tanzania as early as 1961, even before the latter’s full independence, laying the foundation for long-term cooperation rooted in South–South cooperation and mutual respect. In recent years, this relationship has been elevated further, with both sides focusing on expanding collaboration across economic, political, and technological domains.

Economic ties form the backbone of the partnership, with bilateral trade crossing USD 9 billion and steadily growing. India is among Tanzania’s largest trading partners and investors, exporting petroleum products, pharmaceuticals, and machinery while importing gold, pulses, and natural resources. Tanzania’s strategic location makes it a gateway to East Africa , enhancing its importance in India’s broader Africa outreach. Initiatives such as local currency trade mechanisms aim to reduce dependency on global currencies and strengthen financial resilience.

Beyond trade, India has positioned itself as a key development partner , extending Lines of Credit for infrastructure, water supply, and energy projects that directly benefit millions. Cooperation in capacity building remains central, with initiatives in education, healthcare, and skills training, including institutions like IIT Madras Zanzibar. In the digital sphere, collaboration on digital public infrastructure , including platforms inspired by India Stack, is emerging as a transformative pillar.

Strategically, the partnership has expanded into defence and maritime domains, guided by a defence roadmap and aligned with India’s SAGAR vision for the Indian Ocean Region. Cooperation in maritime security, training, and emerging technologies reflects growing convergence on regional stability. At the same time, strong diaspora ties , with a vibrant Indian-origin community in Tanzania, continue to serve as a cultural and economic bridge.

Looking ahead, both countries are exploring new areas such as renewable energy, agriculture, fisheries, and the blue economy , while addressing challenges like regulatory barriers and global competition. Overall, India–Tanzania relations today represent a forward-looking partnership built on trust, shared development goals, and expanding strategic convergence.
