India and Algeria have agreed to further expand defence cooperation following the inaugural Joint Commission meeting held in New Delhi, signalling a steady evolution of bilateral ties from historical solidarity to a more strategic partnership .

The relationship dates back to Algeria’s independence in 1962, when India extended strong support to its liberation movement. Both nations later emerged as key members of the Non-Aligned Movement, building ties rooted in mutual respect and shared strategic autonomy .

At the latest meeting, the two sides identified priority areas including training, joint military exercises, medical cooperation, and defence industry collaboration . They also signed the Rules of Procedure to institutionalise engagement under the Joint Commission framework. Officials said the move provides a structured roadmap for sustained cooperation.

The meeting was co-chaired by Joint Secretary Amitabh Prasad and Algeria’s Naval Chief of Staff, Major General Kaid Nour Eddine, who also paid homage at the National War Memorial. The Algerian delegation is scheduled to interact with Indian defence industry stakeholders during the visit.

Defence ties have gained momentum since the 2024 Defence MoU , with both countries seeking to deepen collaboration amid evolving regional security challenges. Algeria’s strategic location in North Africa and India’s expanding defence outreach to Africa are seen as complementary factors.

On the economic front, bilateral trade remains modest but stable , estimated at around USD 1–2 billion, largely driven by energy imports such as petroleum and LNG, alongside Indian exports of pharmaceuticals, rice, and engineering goods. Officials noted that trade potential remains underutilised, with opportunities in infrastructure, energy, and manufacturing.

Overall, India–Algeria relations are marked by strong political goodwill, growing defence engagement, and untapped economic potential , reflecting a gradual shift towards a more comprehensive and future-oriented partnership.
