India advises Nationals to leave Iran amid escalating tensions, security concerns

India on Monday advised all its nationals residing in Iran to leave the country by available means of transport, including commercial flights, citing an evolving and increasingly volatile security situation marked by domestic unrest and rising geopolitical tensions involving the United States .

The advisory comes amid fresh anti-government protests in Tehran , particularly by university students, marking the first major wave of demonstrations since a violent crackdown on protesters last month. The unrest has raised concerns over internal stability, while parallel fears of possible US military action against Iran have further heightened tensions in the region.

Diplomatic sources said a potential escalation in US-Iran hostilities could result in military strikes, disruption of essential services, and restrictions on civilian movement, posing serious risks to foreign nationals. Airspace closures, cancellation of commercial flights, and breakdowns in communication networks remain key concerns should the situation deteriorate further.

According to official estimates, more than 10,000 Indians including students, pilgrims, businesspersons and tourists are currently living in Iran. Indian students studying at Iranian universities could face disruptions to academic schedules and campus safety, while pilgrims and tourists may find it difficult to move safely or secure onward travel. Business activities are also likely to be affected due to closures and curfews in sensitive areas.

“In continuation of the advisory issued on January 5 and in view of the evolving situation in Iran, Indian nationals who are currently in Iran are advised to leave the country by all available means, including commercial flights,” the Indian mission said. Those unable to leave immediately have been advised to exercise extreme caution, avoid protest sites and demonstrations, and remain in close contact with the Indian Embassy .

The Embassy has asked all Indian nationals and persons of Indian origin to keep their travel and identity documents readily accessible at all times and to register their details with the mission to enable quick assistance if required. Emergency helpline numbers and email support have been activated to assist citizens facing difficulties related to safety, documentation or travel.
