India has marked a significant milestone in its clean energy journey, with wind power capacity surpassing 56 gigawatts (GW), Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday, calling it a “great achievement” for the nation’s sustainable future.

Speaking during his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat, Modi highlighted that nearly 6 GW of wind energy capacity has been added in the past year alone, underlining the rapid pace of growth in the sector. He urged citizens to adopt energy-saving practices and embrace clean energy, stressing that the transition is not just about environmental protection but also about securing the country’s future.

Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi recently noted that 2025–26 has been the best-ever year for wind energy expansion, with a record 6.1 GW added. India now ranks fourth globally in wind energy capacity, with over 56.1 GW installed and an additional 28 GW under various stages of implementation.

The achievement reflects India’s broader renewable energy progress. Solar power leads the clean energy mix with around 150 GW, followed by wind at 56 GW, while hydro power contributes about 56 GW (large and small combined) and bio energy adds roughly 11 GW. This diversified portfolio strengthens energy security and reduces dependence on fossil fuels.

Joshi also pointed to the vast untapped potential in the sector, estimating India’s wind energy capacity at nearly 1,164 GW at higher turbine heights. He expressed confidence that the country will reach 100 GW by 2030 and 156 GW by 2036, supporting India’s long-term goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.

Wind energy plays a crucial role in stabilising the power system, as nearly 45 per cent of its generation occurs during evening and night hours when electricity demand is typically high making it an effective complement to solar energy.

With sustained policy support and growing investments, India’s wind energy milestone is being seen as a key step toward a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
