Income Tax dept opens 24x7 vigil cell on black money ahead of elections
The Income Tax Department has established a 24x7 control room in Kochi to monitor the movement of unaccounted cash and valuables ahead of the 2026 Kerala Legislative Assembly elections , as part of measures to assist the Election Commission of India in ensuring free and fair polls.
Officials said comprehensive arrangements have been put in place to curb the use of unaccounted money during the election period. During the enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct, the Directorate of Income Tax (Investigation), Kerala, will maintain strict vigil on the movement of unaccounted cash, bullion, precious metals and other valuables suspected to be used for electoral purposes within the state.
The move comes as several states, including Kerala, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal, Assam and the Union Territory of Puducherry, are scheduled to go to the polls in 2026.
As part of the monitoring mechanism, a round-the-clock control room has been set up at the office of the Director General of Income Tax (Investigation) at Aayakar Bhavan on Old Railway Station Road in Kochi.
The department has also opened multiple communication channels for the public to share credible information regarding suspicious movement or distribution of money and valuables linked to elections. Citizens can report such information through a toll-free number 1800 425 3173 , a mobile and WhatsApp number 8547002030 , or via email at kerala.election2024@incometax.gov.in .
Officials said residents can contact the toll-free number at any time during the Model Code of Conduct period. Informants are not required to disclose personal details such as their name or identity, though the information provided must be credible and actionable.
The control room will remain operational from the date of announcement of the elections until the completion of the entire poll process.
Authorities have urged citizens to actively participate in strengthening democratic values by reporting any suspicious election-related financial activity, assuring that the identity of informants will be kept strictly confidential.
