Governors in Tamil Nadu and Kerala have scaled down their official security convoys , reducing the number of escort vehicles in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation and austerity measures .

Tamil Nadu Governor R Viswanath Arlekar has reduced the number of police security vehicles accompanying his convoy from ten to four , according to Lok Bhavan sources. The decision, officials said, is aimed at cutting fuel consumption and promoting more efficient use of government resources.

In Kerala, Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has also reduced the size of his convoy by one-third , with official sources stating that the convoy will now include only pilot and escort vehicles , without elaborating further on the revised structure.

Sources in Lok Bhavan said both decisions were taken following the Prime Minister’s recent appeal urging citizens and institutions to adopt fuel-saving practices amid broader economic considerations, including concerns linked to global energy markets.

Prime Minister Modi had recently called for a nationwide shift toward reduced petrol and diesel consumption , suggesting measures such as greater use of metro rail services, public transport, electric vehicles, carpooling, railway parcel services, and work-from-home arrangements to conserve fuel and foreign exchange.

The appeal was reiterated during a public rally organised by the Telangana BJP in Hyderabad, where he also highlighted the need for austerity in public life . Following this, official convoys of several constitutional functionaries have reportedly been reviewed for fuel efficiency.

Officials said the revised convoy arrangements for both Governors are now in effect during official and non-official engagements.
