IMD Warns of Extremely Heavy Rain in North Bengal, Alerts for Landslides and Flash Floods

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast intense rainfall across north Bengal over the next two days as an active southwest monsoon continues over the region, warning of possible landslides in hilly areas, flash floods in low lying zones and rising river levels . The alert comes as several districts face persistent rainfall, raising concerns over infrastructure, transport and public safety.

The IMD said Jalpaiguri and Alipurduar are likely to receive extremely heavy rainfall, while Darjeeling, Kalimpong and Cooch Behar are expected to witness very heavy rain. The weather office cautioned that continuous showers could affect vulnerable areas of the sub Himalayan region, with rivers including the Teesta, Torsa, Jaldhaka and Raidak likely to see increased water levels.

Heavy rain has been lashing north Bengal districts since Saturday. According to IMD data, Murti in Jalpaiguri recorded the highest rainfall in West Bengal at 17 cm in the 24 hours ending 8.30 am on Sunday. Other locations reporting very heavy rainfall included Jalpaiguri (14 cm), Dalgaon Tea Estate (13 cm), Nagrakata (13 cm), Raidak Tea Estate (12 cm), Buxaduar (11 cm) and Maynaguri (10 cm).

The weather department has also warned of disruptions in hill districts due to possible landslides and advised caution for residents and travellers. Earlier alerts highlighted risks of road blockages, reduced visibility and sudden changes in river conditions in the Himalayan foothills.

Heavy rainfall is also expected in south Bengal districts including North and South 24 Parganas, Nadia, Howrah, Purba Medinipur, Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram between July 21 and 23 . Kolkata is likely to witness cloudy skies with light to moderate rain over the next few days.
