IMD Issues Orange Alert for Five Himachal Districts as Heavy Rainfall Likely Over Next Few Days
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for five districts of Himachal Pradesh, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next two to three days and cautioning residents about the heightened risk of landslides, flash floods and travel disruptions.
According to IMD Himachal Pradesh Centre Head Shobhit Katiyar , the southwest monsoon is expected to remain active across the state for at least the next week. The most intense rainfall is likely in the mid-hill and adjoining lower hill regions , particularly in Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla and Solan districts, where isolated areas may receive heavy to very heavy showers.
Katiyar said rainfall activity is expected to continue beyond July 7, with isolated heavy showers likely between July 8 and July 10. The intensity of rainfall is forecast to increase again from July 11, with heavy rainfall likely to persist until around July 12.
The IMD has also projected a more active monsoon phase between July 12 and July 16-17 , during which districts such as Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Solan and Sirmaur are expected to receive the highest rainfall. The active monsoon conditions are likely to continue across much of Himachal Pradesh until around July 22 before gradually weakening after July 23.
Despite the forecast of intense rainfall, Himachal Pradesh has so far recorded below-normal monsoon rainfall this season. Between June 1 and July 5, the state received approximately 151.5 mm of rainfall , compared to the normal 180.36 mm , representing a deficit of about 16 per cent .
The IMD has warned that continuous rainfall could significantly increase the likelihood of landslides, mudslides and flash floods , especially in vulnerable regions. Water levels in rivers, streams and other water bodies are also expected to rise. Authorities have advised residents and tourists to avoid venturing near water bodies, remain cautious while travelling due to reduced visibility and slippery roads, and follow all weather advisories issued by the IMD and local administrations to minimise the risk to life and property.
