IMD Forecasts Thunderstorms and Persistent Humidity in Andhra Pradesh for Next Five Days

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a multi-day weather alert for Andhra Pradesh, warning of thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds, and rising hot, humid conditions across several regions, with north coastal and inland districts expected to be most affected .

According to the Meteorological Centre in Amaravati , North Coastal Andhra Pradesh districts Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, and Visakhapatnam are likely to face the highest impact , with thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds reaching 30 - 40 kmph , particularly during April 10 and 11. These conditions are driven by pre-monsoon convective activity , triggered by atmospheric instability and moisture inflow.

Across Coastal Andhra Pradesh, including East and West Godavari, Krishna, Guntur, Nellore, and Yanam , residents are expected to experience a combination of intermittent thunderstorms in the initial phase followed by persistent hot and humid weather . The IMD has cautioned that while temperatures may not rise sharply in the immediate term, high humidity levels will significantly increase the “feels-like” temperature , intensifying discomfort.

In the Rayalaseema region comprising Kurnool, Anantapur, Kadapa, and Chittoor isolated thunderstorms are expected in the early days , after which the region will transition into intense heat and humidity , heightening the risk of heat stress and dehydration , especially for outdoor workers.

Meteorologists attribute the evolving weather pattern to a north-south trough extending from interior Odisha to the Gulf of Mannar, along with an upper air cyclonic circulation over north Tamil Nadu, both of which are enhancing vertical air movement and convective activity across southern India. This marks a typical pre-monsoon transition phase, where short-duration storms are followed by oppressive humid heat.

The IMD’s day-wise forecast indicates that thunderstorm activity will peak during April 10–11 , gradually weakening by April 12, while hot and humid conditions will dominate from April 13 to April 16 across Coastal Andhra Pradesh, Yanam, and Rayalaseema . Weather warning maps in the official bulletin show widespread alerts across the state in the initial days , later shifting toward heat-related warnings .

At the administrative level, district authorities have initiated precautionary measures in line with standard disaster response protocols. Control rooms have been activated , and coordination is underway with state disaster management agencies to monitor developments.
