IMD Forecasts Heavy Rain, Gusty Winds In North Andhra As Low-Pressure Area Forms

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast unsettled weather over North Andhra following the formation of a low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining regions. The system is expected to influence weather conditions along the Andhra Pradesh coast, bringing rain, thunderstorms and strong winds.

According to the latest IMD forecast, Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam are likely to receive isolated to scattered rainfall, while the developing weather system could bring heavy rain at isolated places in North Andhra. The rainfall activity is expected to be accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning in some areas.

The weather system is also likely to produce strong winds along and off the North Andhra coast, with speeds reaching around 40–50 kmph and gusting up to 60 kmph. Sea conditions are expected to remain rough, prompting authorities to advise fishermen to stay away from the sea while the adverse conditions persist.

The forecast comes amid warnings from the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) that North Andhra could experience heavy rainfall on August 24 and 25. Districts including Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli and Kakinada are among the areas that could experience rain and thunderstorms.

Officials have urged residents to remain cautious during periods of strong winds and lightning. People have been advised to avoid standing under trees, near large hoardings or other structures that could become hazardous during gusty weather.

Home and Disaster Management Minister V Anitha has directed district administrations to closely monitor the situation, particularly in coastal and low-lying areas. Police, revenue, fisheries and disaster management departments have been asked to coordinate and keep emergency response teams on standby.

Authorities have stressed that protection of lives and property remains the top priority as the weather system affects the region.
