
Ilaiyaraaja’s 50-Year Legacy Celebrated With Emotional AI Tribute Video
As legendary composer Ilaiyaraaja completes 50 years in Indian cinema, the makers of his upcoming biopic have unveiled a grand AI-powered tribute video celebrating the maestro’s extraordinary musical journey.
Released by Connekkt Media, Mercuri Movies, and WPP Production, the tribute marks the golden jubilee of Ilaiyaraaja’s debut through the 1976 Tamil classic Annakili , the film that transformed Tamil cinema’s musical landscape. The video blends archival-style visuals, cinematic storytelling, and AI-generated recreations of a young Ilaiyaraaja, tracing his rise from a struggling composer to one of India’s greatest musical icons.
The emotionally charged tribute has drawn strong praise online for its nostalgic presentation and innovative use of technology. Over a career spanning five decades, Ilaiyaraaja has composed music for more than 1,500 films and over 9,000 songs across nine languages , redefining film music and background scoring in Indian cinema.
“Ilaiyaraaja sir’s music is the emotional memory of generations,” Connekkt Media founder Varun Mathur said, adding that the team wanted to create a tribute that matched the timelessness of the composer’s work.
Mercuri Group CEO Sriram Bakthisaran said the project showcased how AI could support creative storytelling while reducing production costs. WPP Production CEO Karthik Nagarajan described the film as a meeting point of emotion, culture, and innovation .
Meanwhile, anticipation around the official Ilaiyaraaja biopic continues to grow. The film stars Dhanush, with Arun Matheswaran directing. Reports suggest pre-production has been completed , while filming is expected to begin after Matheswaran finishes his upcoming project DC . The makers are yet to announce a release date.
