IIT Madras researchers identify physiological markers to predict and manage test anxiety in students

Researchers at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras have identified key physiological indicators that can help pinpoint students most vulnerable to test anxiety, opening the door to personalised interventions that could transform how educational institutions address academic stress. The study, published in Behavioural Brain Research , provides new insights into the neurobiological mechanisms underlying anxiety and performance.

Test anxiety affects an estimated 81 per cent of Indian students, according to the National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT, 2022), often hindering academic performance and long-term mental health. While some students perform well under pressure, others experience avoidance behaviour and struggle to cope. The IIT Madras team, led by Venkatesh Balasubramanian of the Department of Engineering Design, sought to understand these differences using objective physiological data, moving beyond self-reported perceptions.

The researchers found that a breakdown in brain-heart communication during stress makes certain students more prone to heightened anxiety and avoidance, revealing a biological distinction between adaptive and maladaptive test responses. The study focuses on two integrated physiological markers: Frontal Alpha Asymmetry (FAA), a brain-based indicator of emotional regulation, and Heart Rate Variability (HRV), which measures the heart’s adaptive control. Students with a negative FAA pattern exhibited weaker heart regulation under stress, indicating that their anxiety predisposition could override the heart’s ability to maintain balance in evaluative situations.

“This nuanced understanding reshapes how we view academic stress, framing it not merely as a psychological issue, but as a phenomenon grounded in measurable physiological interactions,” Balasubramanian explained.

Swathy Parameswaran, a research scholar at IIT Madras, highlighted the practical applications of these findings. By leveraging artificial intelligence trained on these psycho-physiological markers, educators and mental health professionals could soon employ non-invasive, real-time monitoring tools to identify at-risk students before visible signs of distress emerge. The research also lays the groundwork for personalised stress management strategies and behavioural interventions that can be integrated into school and university wellness programs, shifting the focus from reactive support to proactive care.

While IITs are pioneering such advanced approaches, mental health initiatives in other Indian colleges vary widely. Many state universities, private institutions, and smaller colleges have basic counseling centers or wellness programs, but they often lack the infrastructure or trained personnel to implement sophisticated physiological monitoring. Awareness remains a challenge, and students may not even know that support programs exist. Some institutions are collaborating with NGOs or research labs to introduce mindfulness workshops, peer support, and early detection programs, but scaling access and standardising interventions across the country remains a key gap.

Although preliminary, the IIT Madras study, conducted with 52 participants, represents a significant step toward combining neuroscience with educational psychology. The team plans to expand the research by involving larger and more diverse groups of students, exploring additional factors like sleep patterns and physical activity to enhance predictive models. Advanced EEG-based connectivity mapping will further deepen the understanding of heart-brain dynamics under stress, paving the way for more targeted and effective interventions for students facing test anxiety across India.
