IIT Madras positions India at forefront of Lab-Grown diamond technology

Indian Institute of Technology Madras is spearheading India’s efforts to emerge as a global leader in lab-grown diamond (LGD) technologies, expanding their application beyond jewellery into cutting-edge sectors such as quantum computing, electronics, and space research.

The institute’s dedicated research hub, the India Centre for Lab-Grown Diamond (InCent-LGD), established with support from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, is focused on developing indigenous capabilities in producing both gem-quality and electronic-grade diamonds. The initiative aims to strengthen self-reliance, promote innovation, and accelerate the growth of India’s high-technology manufacturing ecosystem.

Lab-grown diamonds, known for their exceptional thermal conductivity, durability, and resistance to radiation, are increasingly being explored for use in advanced applications including photonics, sensing technologies, and high-performance semiconductors.

Highlighting its global outreach, IIT Madras recently hosted the International Conference on Diamond and Emergent Materials (iCDEM 2026), which brought together nearly 250 researchers, scientists, and industry professionals from India and abroad. The event, organised in collaboration with the University of Arizona and the Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council, marked a significant milestone as the country’s first dedicated forum on diamond-based advanced materials.

The conference focused on emerging trends such as AI-driven optimisation of diamond growth processes, next-generation electronic materials, and the integration of diamond technologies in energy, fusion, and space applications. It also facilitated collaborations between academia and industry, with participation from over 25 companies and numerous research institutions.

Officials said the initiative is expected to drive technological advancements, support start-ups, generate employment, and boost exports. Backed by a ₹242.96 crore allocation announced in the Union Budget 2023–24, the programme seeks to build a robust ecosystem for diamond-based technologies in India.

The next edition of the conference, iCDEM 2027, is scheduled to be held at IIT Madras in January next year, further consolidating India’s position in this rapidly evolving domain.
