IIT Madras Opens First U.S. Center To Take Indian Deep-Tech Innovation Global
Indian Institute of Technology Madras has marked a major milestone in India’s technological journey by launching its first research and innovation center in the United States, strengthening the country’s growing presence in the global deep-tech ecosystem.
The new center, established by the IITM Global Research Foundation in Menlo Park, was announced during the SelectUSA Investment Summit. Located in the heart of Silicon Valley, the center is expected to serve as a gateway for Indian startups, researchers and entrepreneurs to connect with leading global industries and investors.
The initiative reflects India’s rising stature in advanced technology sectors such as Artificial Intelligence, semiconductors, robotics, clean energy and biotechnology. Officials said the move would help Indian innovations move beyond laboratories and enter international markets faster.
According to IIT Madras, the project involves a planned investment of nearly US$ 7.5 million, including a US$ 4.5 million greenfield investment by the institution. The center has been launched in partnership with CA Startups and is aimed at promoting deep-tech commercialization and startup incubation.
Speaking about the expansion, IIT Madras Director Prof. V. Kamakoti said the initiative represents the institute’s vision of taking Indian research and innovation to the global stage. Other officials noted that the U.S. presence would help strengthen collaboration between India and America in research, entrepreneurship and technology development.
Experts believe the move is a significant boost for India’s innovation ecosystem. By establishing a presence in Silicon Valley, Indian startups and students will gain access to global venture capital networks, cutting-edge research environments and international mentorship opportunities.
The development is also being viewed as a proud moment for India’s education and technology sectors, highlighting how Indian institutions are increasingly becoming global innovation leaders. The center is expected to encourage more international partnerships and create opportunities for Indian talent to compete on a worldwide platform.
IITM Global has also announced plans to establish a second center on the U.S. East Coast to strengthen ties with financial and policy institutions, further expanding India’s global technology footprint.
The initiative signals a new chapter for Indian deep-tech innovation, showcasing how the country’s research capabilities are steadily reaching global standards and contributing to the international technology landscape.
