IIT Madras, Applied Materials join hands to boost semiconductor research
The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras has expanded its strategic collaboration with Applied Materials India Private Limited, a subsidiary of Applied Materials, Inc., to advance cutting-edge semiconductor research and nurture industry-ready talent, officials announced on Thursday.
As part of the collaboration, IIT Madras will deploy the foundational software framework of Applied Materials’ AppliedTwin platform, a sophisticated digital twin solution designed to model and optimise semiconductor manufacturing equipment and processes. The move comes at a critical juncture, as IIT Madras, in partnership with the Government of Tamil Nadu, is establishing its own semiconductor fabrication (FAB) facility with integrated reliability and packaging capabilities.
“The deployment of the foundational software of Applied Materials’ AppliedTwin framework will empower our faculty and students to accelerate concept creation, prototyping, testing, and process exploration virtually, thereby significantly reducing R&D costs and timelines,” said IIT Madras Director V. Kamakoti. He added that the initiative is a transformative step toward preparing a skilled, industry-ready workforce and aligns strongly with India’s semiconductor mission.
Applied Materials’ AppliedTwin framework aims to foster collaboration across suppliers, government bodies, customers, and research institutions, creating a robust innovation network to strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem.
“By deploying the foundational AppliedTwin framework, we are equipping future engineers and researchers with the tools to engage deeply with advanced semiconductor technologies,” said Avi Avula, Country President of Applied Materials India. “This initiative not only enhances workforce development but also catalyses innovation through academia-industry collaborations, which are essential for India’s journey to becoming a global hub for semiconductor design and manufacturing.”
With this partnership, IIT Madras and Applied Materials are poised to play a pivotal role in advancing semiconductor research, accelerating innovation, and building the next generation of skilled professionals critical for India’s semiconductor ambitions.
