
IIT Kharagpur Student Dies in Fatal Fall, CCTV Footage Under Probe
A 19-year-old IIT Kharagpur student died after allegedly falling from the third-floor terrace of a building on the institute campus, police said on Friday.
The deceased was identified as Ankit Sharma, a second-year Mechanical Engineering student and a resident of Nagaur in Rajasthan. The incident took place on Thursday afternoon at the institute’s Nalanda building.
According to police, Sharma allegedly fell from the third-floor terrace of the building. Several students and other people in the vicinity heard a loud thud and found him lying on the ground.
The injured student was immediately rushed to BC Roy Technology Hospital, located on the IIT Kharagpur campus. However, doctors declared him dead upon arrival, the police officer said.
Following the incident, a police team from the Hijli outpost of Kharagpur Town Police Station began an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fall.
Police are examining CCTV footage from the area and gathering information to determine what happened before Sharma fell from the terrace. Authorities have not yet established whether the incident was an accident or whether any other circumstances were involved.
The police said Sharma’s family has been informed about his death. His body is scheduled to be sent to Midnapore Medical College and Hospital on Friday for a post-mortem examination.
The investigation is expected to provide further clarity on the circumstances leading to the student’s death. Police officials said they were examining available evidence and other relevant details as part of the probe.
The incident has caused concern among students and members of the IIT Kharagpur community, with authorities continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the fatal fall.
