IIT Kanpur class of 2000 pledges record Rs.100 crore donation to alma mater

In a landmark moment for alumni philanthropy in India, the Class of 2000 of the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K) has pledged a record Rs 100 crore to its alma mater during its silver jubilee reunion held on campus.

According to an official statement issued by IIT-K on Monday, this is the highest-ever alumni contribution pledged by a single batch across academic institutions in the country, setting a new benchmark in collective alumni giving.

The pledge was announced on Sunday evening and reflects the batch’s strong sense of gratitude and commitment to strengthening IIT-K’s academic excellence, research ecosystem and societal impact. The alumni have proposed that the funds be utilised to establish the Millennium School of Technology and Society (MSTAS) at the institute.

The announcement marked the highlight of the silver jubilee celebrations, which brought together alumni from across the globe to reconnect with classmates, faculty members and the campus, while reaffirming their long-term association with the institute.

IIT-K Director Manindra Agrawal described the contribution as a powerful affirmation of the enduring bond between the institute and its alumni. He said the pledge would significantly enhance the institute’s academic and research capabilities and inspire future generations of students to give back.

Dean of Resources and Alumni, Amey Karkare, said the initiative exemplified the true spirit of alumni partnership, demonstrating how collective engagement can lead to transformative outcomes for students, faculty and society.

Speaking on behalf of the batch, Naveen Tewari, a distinguished alumnus from the Class of 2000, said IIT Kanpur played a crucial role in shaping not only careers but also mindsets. He noted that the pledge was aimed at ensuring future students receive equal or greater opportunities.

Batch Coordinator Tamal Das said the reunion was marked by nostalgia and a renewed sense of responsibility, adding that the alumni looked forward to working closely with the institute to help build leaders of tomorrow.
