IIT Delhi Gets ₹75 Cr Boost from Alumnus Anant Yardi for AI Research
Indian Institute of Technology Delhi has received a ₹75 crore contribution from its alumnus Anant Yardi, Chairman and Founder of Yardi Systems, to strengthen cutting-edge research in artificial intelligence (AI) and expand campus infrastructure.
Yardi, a 1968-batch alumnus , had earlier also pledged ₹75 crore to his alma mater, reflecting a sustained commitment to advancing research and education. A significant portion of the latest contribution has been earmarked for the Yardi School of Artificial Intelligence (ScAI) , a dedicated centre at IIT Delhi focused on AI, machine learning, and data science.
Established in September 2020, ScAI brings together over 40 faculty members from multiple disciplines, fostering an interdisciplinary and application-driven research ecosystem . The school works on real-world challenges across sectors such as healthcare, robotics, materials science, Industry 4.0, weather forecasting, and transportation areas that underline the growing importance of AI in solving complex societal and industrial problems.
The contribution will also support IIT Delhi’s Infrastructure Renewal and Expansion Programme , aimed at enhancing campus capacity and improving the overall academic environment. The first phase includes the development of new academic buildings and housing facilities , essential to meet the institute’s expanding academic and residential needs.
Highlighting the significance of AI, the initiative aligns with India’s broader push towards becoming a technology-driven and knowledge-based economy . Investments in AI research are expected to boost innovation, support startup ecosystems, and create a skilled workforce equipped for emerging global demands.
Expressing gratitude, Yardi said IIT Delhi provided him with a strong foundation to pursue global opportunities, adding that he hopes the contribution will enable future generations to address evolving technological challenges.
The donation also underscores the growing role of alumni philanthropy in strengthening premier institutions, enhancing their global standing, and reducing dependence on public funding while accelerating research and innovation.
