IIIT Nagpur Student Dies After Jumping From Hostel Building

A second-year engineering student of the Indian Institute of Information Technology Nagpur allegedly died after jumping from the ninth floor of a hostel building on campus in the early hours of Monday, police said.

The deceased, Shreyash Chandrakant Mane (20) , a native of Kolhapur, was pursuing Computer Science Engineering (CSE) . The incident occurred between 4:00 am and 4:30 am , when most hostel residents were asleep.

Police suspect the student may have been under academic stress , with semester examinations approaching and concerns over studies. However, officials clarified that no exact reason has been established yet , and all angles are being probed.

“No suicide note was recovered. A case of accidental death has been registered, and we are investigating personal and academic factors ,” Assistant Inspector Nilesh Chaure said.

Officials said foul play and ragging have been ruled out so far . Police are also examining the student’s mobile phone and recent activities for clues. CCTV footage reportedly showed him heading towards the upper floors of the hostel before the incident.

The death has triggered shock among students on campus , with many gathering after the news spread. Authorities are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances leading to the incident.
