IIIT-Hyderabad brings anatomy to life

IIIT Hyderabad has launched AnaVu (Anatomy Viewer), a state-of-the-art 3D anatomical visualization platform that promises to transform the way medical education is delivered in India. Developed by the institute’s Healthcare vertical in collaboration with IHub-Data, AnaVu provides students with an immersive and interactive experience of human anatomy, moving far beyond traditional 2D diagrams and cadaver-based teaching.

Unlike conventional virtual or augmented reality systems that are often expensive, resource-intensive, and limited to small groups, AnaVu has been designed with scalability in mind. It employs stereoscopic projection technology and a lightweight, intuitive interface that can be deployed in large classrooms. This enables dozens of students to simultaneously explore anatomical structures—rotating organs, zooming in on specific regions, and virtually peeling back layers to understand spatial relationships.

The models within AnaVu are constructed from anonymized MRI and CT imaging data, ensuring both accuracy and realism. This integration allows learners to correlate gross anatomy with radiological insights, a crucial skill for modern medical practice.

Pilot implementations at Bhaskar Medical College, Osmania Medical College, and Government Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram, have demonstrated its effectiveness. Students and faculty reported that the tool improved clarity, retention, and engagement compared to conventional methods.

Looking ahead, IIIT Hyderabad envisions AnaVu extending beyond classrooms into clinical environments. Doctors could use its interactive models to explain medical conditions to patients in a more understandable way. With plans to expand its anatomical library and reach more institutions, AnaVu is poised to become a cornerstone of India’s digital health and medical education ecosystem.
