“If Rahul Gandhi Joins BJP…” Fake Quote Goes Viral, Kangana Ranaut Slams It on Instagram
Indian social media has once again proven that fiction travels faster than fact. On May 3, a popular Instagram meme page shared a doctored quote attributed to BJP MP and actress Kangana Ranaut, and within hours, the internet was ablaze. The fabricated statement read, "Agar Rahul Gandhi BJP join karenge toh main unse shaadi karne ke liye tayar hoon" - loosely translated to: "If Rahul Gandhi joins the BJP, I am ready to marry him."
The meme did not emerge from thin air. The controversy was sparked in the backdrop of Raghav Chadha 's high-profile switch to the BJP, which had already set off a wildfire of online debates about politicians crossing the aisle. Opportunistic meme pages seized the moment, stitching together a sensational narrative that had no credible source, no verified interview, and no video evidence to support it whatsoever.
Kangana, refusing to let the misinformation slide, reposted the viral meme on her Instagram Stories on May 4 to set the record straight. She was blunt and unapologetic. "How pathetic is this fake news. No dignity for women even in politics. Shame on those who are spreading this fake news," she wrote.
The irony is rich. Kangana and Rahul Gandhi have historically stood at polar opposite ends of the ideological spectrum , with the Mandi MP frequently criticising the Congress leader's parliamentary speeches and policies. The very absurdity of the claim is what made it go viral and also what made it dangerous.
This episode serves as a stark reminder of the growing menace of doctored quotes and deepfakes in the digital age, where a single meme page can hijack public discourse, drag real people through manufactured controversies, and walk away consequence-free. Laugh at the meme, but don't ignore what it represents.
