‘If Modi Was PM In 1947, India Would Not Have Been Damaged’: Yogi Adityanath

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Friday launched a sharp attack on the Congress over the Partition of India, saying the country would not have suffered the same fate had Narendra Modi been prime minister at the time of Independence.

Addressing an event in Lucknow organised to commemorate the horrors of the 1947 Partition, Adityanath blamed the Congress for the division of the country and the violence and bloodshed that followed. He said stronger leadership at the time could have prevented what he described as the disintegration of India.

“Had Narendra Modi been the prime minister of India at the time of Independence, nobody would have been able to damage India in the slightest,” Adityanath said.

Drawing a comparison with Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, the chief minister said that had a leader like Patel been prime minister, “nobody would have been able to disintegrate India”.

Adityanath accused the Congress leadership of prioritising political power over national interest, alleging that the country paid a heavy price for what he described as its failures during the period surrounding Independence.

He also questioned the territorial division during Partition, referring to Sindh, Punjab and Bengal and alleging that areas with substantial Hindu populations were handed over to Pakistan.

The BJP leader further accused the Congress of remaining silent over attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, alleging that vote-bank considerations influenced its response to such incidents.

Adityanath said India had also suffered because of internal divisions based on caste, region and language, warning that such differences could weaken the country and create space for conspiracies.

His remarks came during programmes remembering the immense human cost of Partition, when millions were displaced and widespread communal violence claimed countless lives. His comments are likely to add fresh political heat to the continuing debate over Partition, Congress and the leadership choices of 1947.
