Idupulapaya peacock sanctuary faces neglect

Bird lovers and tourists are expressing growing concern over the state of the Idupulapaya Peacock Reproduction and Conservation Centre, where the population of peacocks is said to be dwindling due to a lack of proper care and supervision. The sanctuary, recognized as the only one of its kind in the Telugu states, is facing a severe crisis that threatens its existence as a vital conservation hub.

The late Chief Minister Dr. YS Rajasekhara Reddy laid the foundation for the center with an initial fund of ₹50 lakh. However, recent reports indicate a dramatic decline, with the number of peacocks dropping from a high of over 100 to a mere 21.

• Non-functional incubator: The center’s incubator, a crucial piece of equipment for breeding, has been out of service for four years. The staff has resorted to using chickens to incubate the eggs, a method that is far less effective and is believed to be a primary reason for the low reproduction rate. The cost of a new incubator, around ₹2 lakh, highlights the perceived neglect.

• Mass deaths: In a tragic incident in January, nine peacocks died simultaneously, with post-mortems suggesting poisoning. The lack of CCTV cameras has made it difficult for authorities to investigate and identify the culprits.

• Neglect of other animals: Reports from tourists suggest that other animals housed at the sanctuary, including rabbits and love birds, have also died due to a lack of proper care, reflecting a broader issue of neglect.

The sanctuary's importance extends beyond its role in conservation. It is the only peacock rehabilitation and conservation center in the two Telugu states, and establishing such a facility requires special permission from the central government. In 2016, the park faced a threat of closure due to a lack of funds, a decision that was later withdrawn.

Despite these setbacks, a forest officer, identified as Balasubramaniam, stated that a report has been submitted to the government to acquire a new incubator. He also confirmed that a case has been registered regarding the deaths and that the installation of CCTV cameras is planned.

The future of the park remains a matter of great concern for the public. Local residents and visitors are calling for a renewed focus on the sanctuary's protection and development, emphasizing its importance as both an educational resource and a tourist attraction.
