ICG inducts indigenous Pollution Control Vessel ‘Samudra Pratap’ for security & environment

The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) on Tuesday inducted its first indigenously designed and built Pollution Control Vessel (PCV) , Samudra Pratap, marking a major step in strengthening India’s maritime pollution response and national security.

Constructed by Goa Shipyard Limited under the two-PCV project, Samudra Pratap is the first PCV of the Coast Guard to be entirely designed and built in India . The vessel features over 60 per cent indigenous content, reflecting the government’s commitment to Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives.

The induction ceremony, attended by senior ICG officials and dignitaries from Goa Shipyard Limited, highlighted the vessel’s dual role in environmental protection and maritime security . Samudra Pratap will enforce marine pollution control regulations, conduct search and rescue operations, safeguard India’s Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), and support maritime law enforcement.

Equipped with state-of-the-art weapons and technologies, the vessel features a 30 mm CRN-91 gun , two 12.7 mm stabilised remote-controlled guns with integrated fire control systems, Integrated Bridge System, Integrated Platform Management System, Automated Power Management System, shaft generator, and high-capacity firefighting systems. For pollution response, it boasts flush-type side sweeping arms, oil fingerprinting machine, gyro-stabilised standoff chemical detector, and a pollution-response boat with davit. It is also the first PCV in the ICG fleet to feature a retractable stern thruster and dynamic positioning system (DP-I).

Pollution control in India’s EEZ is vital for protecting marine biodiversity, safeguarding fisheries and offshore resources, preventing environmental disasters, and strengthening maritime law enforcement. The vessel enhances India’s ability to rapidly respond to oil spills, chemical leaks, and other maritime hazards, thereby reinforcing national security and environmental resilience.

According to the ICG, Samudra Pratap significantly boosts India’s capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region , ensuring the country can effectively manage maritime pollution incidents while maintaining strategic and economic security.
