Ice cubes, air coolers, and summer treats for animals of Odisha's Sambalpur Zoo

As the summer heat intensifies, Sambalpur Zoo is going the extra mile to ensure its animals stay cool and comfortable. From large ice cubes to air coolers , the zoo has implemented multiple measures to help wildlife beat the soaring temperatures.

Anshu Pragyan, DFO of Hirakud Wildlife Division, said air coolers have been installed in the bear and leopard enclosures . All 28 animal habitats are equipped with bamboo sheds, thatched roofs, and water holes , with water being sprinkled on the roofs during peak heat hours to maintain a cooler environment.

Summer diets have been specially tailored. Animals are given glucose, ORS, honey, and electrolytes , along with fruits high in water content such as watermelon, cucumber, papaya, grapes, and tomatoes , plus fresh “salads” to keep them hydrated.

Bird enclosures are shielded with green nets and bamboo thatch , while the Orchidarium featuring 101 species and the rose garden are regularly watered using Greennets. Newly added animals like blackbucks and hogdeers also have dedicated cooling arrangements.

With around 1,000 visitors during summer holidays, the zoo has planned storytelling sessions , combining fun and education for families.

Home to 350 animals across 18 species , Sambalpur Zoo hosts wildlife including bears, leopards, blackbucks, chowsinghas, hogdeers, sambars, monkeys, barking deer, pythons, mongooses, palm civets, and colorful birds like cockatiels, budgerigars, and peacocks. These initiatives ensure a safe, enjoyable, and cool summer for both animals and visitors.
