
ICCCON 2026 Highlights AI, Precision Care and New Frontiers in Cardiology
The 33rd National Conference of the Indian College of Cardiology (ICCCON 2026) is bringing leading cardiologists and cardiovascular specialists together in Kochi from September 11 to 13, with the three-day meeting focusing on some of the most complex challenges confronting modern cardiac care. Organised by the Kerala chapter of the Indian College of Cardiology, the conference brings together specialists from across India along with international faculty under the theme “The Convergence of Experience, Evidence and Innovation.”
The conference's focus on difficult-to-control hypertension, life-threatening pulmonary embolism, complex coronary disease, heart failure and new-generation valve treatments comes amid a significant cardiovascular disease burden in India. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), cardiovascular diseases account for about one-third of all deaths in India. An estimated 220 million Indians live with hypertension, but only around 12% have their blood pressure under control, underscoring the scale of the challenge.
The hypertension problem extends beyond diagnosis. A national study covering around 1.7 million respondents during 2019–2021 found hypertension in 28.1% of participants. Among those with hypertension, 36.9% had been diagnosed, 44.7% of those diagnosed reported taking medication, and only 52.5% of treated patients achieved blood-pressure control equivalent to just 8.5% of all people with hypertension in the study.
The conference's focus on complex coronary disease also reflects advances in precision intervention. Technologies such as intravascular ultrasound and optical coherence tomography are increasingly helping cardiologists assess coronary anatomy, plan procedures and optimize stent placement.
In heart failure, the emphasis is shifting towards earlier intervention and continuous monitoring, with remote-monitoring systems, wearables and connected devices offering ways to identify deterioration before hospitalisation. Meanwhile, AI-assisted ECG analysis is emerging as a potentially powerful screening tool. A recently reported system tested on about 67,000 participants recorded success rates of 81% for heart failure and 90% for heart-valve disease, although researchers stressed that such tools are designed to flag patients for further evaluation rather than replace definitive diagnosis.
The focus on new-generation valve treatments highlights the growing role of minimally invasive structural-heart procedures such as TAVR/TAVI, supported by advanced CT and echocardiographic imaging.
For India, the potential impact extends beyond tertiary hospitals. AI-enabled ECG interpretation, imaging and remote monitoring could help extend specialist expertise to underserved areas, although clinical validation, fragmented health data, interoperability, cybersecurity and trained personnel remain challenges.
With cardiovascular risk factors including hypertension, diabetes, high cholesterol, tobacco use, unhealthy diets and physical inactivity continuing to drive disease, ICCCON 2026 ultimately highlights a dual priority: prevent cardiovascular disease earlier while making advanced treatment more precise, minimally invasive and accessible.
