
IAF Showcases Counter-Drone Readiness During Rotor Clapp-III Exercise at Pokhran
The Indian Air Force (IAF) has successfully concluded its week-long Rotor Clapp-III exercise at the Pokhran Field Firing Range in Rajasthan, showcasing its combat preparedness and ability to counter emerging aerial threats, defence officials said on Sunday.
Conducted on the theme of ‘Counter Unmanned Aerial Systems (Counter-UAS)’, the exercise focused on strengthening the operational capabilities of the IAF’s helicopter fleet against the growing challenge posed by unmanned aerial systems (UAS) in modern warfare.
Multiple helicopter units of the IAF participated in the drill, which aimed to evaluate operational strategies, techniques and procedures under simulated battlefield conditions. Defence sources said the exercise provided an opportunity to test concepts designed to tackle evolving aerial threats and enhance readiness for complex combat scenarios.
During the exercise, almost all major IAF helicopter platforms took part in a series of tactical missions, demonstrating capabilities including precision strikes, battlefield support, reconnaissance, troop insertion and casualty evacuation. The platforms also carried out coordinated operations aimed at countering both aerial and ground-based threats.
The drill assessed mission planning, inter-unit coordination, rapid response mechanisms and joint functioning under conditions similar to real combat situations. Special emphasis was placed on ensuring seamless coordination between different helicopter platforms while operating in the challenging desert environment of the Pokhran range.
The Pokhran Field Firing Range, one of India’s key military training zones, provided a suitable environment for conducting the operational exercise and validating combat procedures.
The successful completion of Rotor Clapp-III reflects the IAF’s continued focus on maintaining a high level of operational readiness and adapting its capabilities to address emerging security challenges, particularly the increasing use of drones and unmanned technologies in modern conflicts.
