IAF Rafales Roar Into Australia as India Joins Massive Pitch Black 2026 Air Combat Exercise

The Indian Air Force (IAF) has begun its participation in Exercise Pitch Black 2026 , one of the world's premier multinational air combat exercises, at the Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Base Darwin in Australia. The exercise will run from July 20 to August 7 and brings together air forces from across the globe for advanced combat training and joint operational missions.

Named after its emphasis on night flying over the vast, sparsely populated regions of northern Australia, Exercise Pitch Black has evolved over its 45-year history into one of the largest international military aviation exercises. This year's edition features an extensive lineup of participating nations and military personnel, making it one of the biggest ever.

The Indian contingent includes highly trained pilots, engineers, technicians, controllers and other Air Warriors , showcasing the IAF's operational capabilities on the global stage. India has deployed its Rafale multirole fighter aircraft , supported by the C-17 Globemaster III strategic transport aircraft and the IL-78 aerial refuelling aircraft , enabling long-range expeditionary operations.

The exercise is designed to enhance interoperability among participating air forces , improve coordination during complex multinational air combat operations and facilitate the exchange of operational knowledge and best practices. It also provides a realistic environment for executing Large Force Employment (LFE) missions that require seamless cooperation among multiple nations.

For the Indian Air Force, the exercise offers a valuable opportunity to validate its ability to conduct sustained air operations far from home while strengthening professional partnerships across the Indo-Pacific . Participation also reinforces India's commitment to regional security and defence cooperation with like-minded nations.

The IAF has been a regular participant in the exercise, having previously taken part in the 2018, 2022 and 2024 editions. Its continued presence at Pitch Black highlights India's growing role in multinational military engagements and its focus on enhancing operational readiness through international collaboration.
