IAF pilatus trainer aircraft crashes near tambaram, Pilot ejects safely

An Indian Air Force (IAF) Pilatus PC-7 Mk II basic trainer aircraft crashed near Tambaram in Tamil Nadu on Friday during a routine training sortie, officials said. The lone pilot on board managed to eject safely, avoiding any injury.

The aircraft went down in an open area near the Mamallapuram–Thiruporur belt, away from residential zones, preventing any civilian casualties or major property damage. Local police and fire personnel reached the site shortly after the incident, while the IAF cordoned off the area.

According to early information, the trainee aircraft encountered a technical issue mid-flight, prompting the pilot to initiate emergency ejection procedures. The pilot was later recovered in stable condition.

The PC-7 Mk II is widely used by the IAF for foundational flight training, making it a crucial part of the Air Force’s training fleet. Although the trainer aircraft is not a combat platform, accidents involving training aircraft are taken seriously due to their impact on pilot training schedules and fleet readiness.

The IAF has ordered a Court of Inquiry to determine the exact cause of the crash. Investigators are expected to examine the aircraft’s maintenance records, flight data, and any potential technical malfunctions.

This is the latest in a series of isolated training-related incidents reported across the country, though the safe ejection of the pilot and absence of civilian harm are viewed as significant positives in an otherwise serious mishap.
