IAF microlight aircraft crashes into pond in Prayagraj, pilots safe

A two‑seater microlite aircraft of the Indian Air Force experienced an accident near Prayagraj in Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday afternoon, but both pilots escaped without injury, defence and police sources said. The incident occurred at around 12:15 pm on January 21, 2026 , when the aircraft departed on a routine training sortie from Air Force Station Bamrauli , the IAF base near Prayagraj.

Microlite aircraft are lightweight, two‑seater planes commonly used by the IAF for pilot training , bird reconnaissance and survey flights.

According to police and defence officials, the aircraft developed a technical malfunction in its engine mid‑air and began losing altitude while flying over the George Town area . Rather than risk a crash in populated zones, the pilots executed a controlled descent into a pond behind K P College ground, preventing harm to civilians or property.

Local residents were the first on the scene. “ Around 12:15 pm we heard a loud noise and rushed out ,” said one eyewitness. “We saw the plane in the pond and immediately helped pull the two pilots out before emergency teams arrived.” Police officials confirmed there were no injuries to civilians and no damage to nearby homes or property .

Police, Air Force and emergency responders were all actively involved in the aftermath. Deputy Commissioner of Police (City) Manish Shandilya said the aircraft’s engine had developed a snag, and the pilots carried out a safe forced landing . The fire brigade, rescue teams, and local residents assisted in securing the area and rescuing the crew, while the site has been cordoned off for safety and investigation. Divers helped retrieve the pilots safely from the pond, ensuring no casualties.

The aircraft suffered significant damage to its airframe and engine assembly from the forced landing and immersion in water, and is being secured by defence personnel for detailed examination. The Indian Air Force has ordered a formal Court of Inquiry to investigate the circumstances, including technical logs, maintenance records, and flight telemetry. Early indications point toward a possible engine fault , though a comprehensive inquiry is ongoing.
