HYDRAA's Restoration Efforts Revive Uppal Nallacheruvu After Heavy Rains

The Uppal Nallacheruvu has emerged as a visible example of the success of HYDRAA's lake restoration initiative, with the waterbody filling up following recent heavy rains and showcasing the impact of ongoing conservation and infrastructure works.

Once choked with plastic waste, sewage and debris, the lake had deteriorated into a polluted waterbody over the years. However, the recent inflow of rainwater has transformed its appearance, highlighting the benefits of the restoration measures undertaken by HYDRAA.

Officials said the project focused on ensuring that stormwater flows freely into the lake, while low-volume sewage is diverted through a dedicated bypass channel. This engineering intervention allows rainwater from upstream areas to reach the lake without obstruction while preventing wastewater from mixing with the stored water. As a result, waterlogging in surrounding neighbourhoods has reduced significantly during the recent spell of heavy rainfall.

As part of the restoration drive, authorities cleared more than 10 acres of encroachments, expanding the lake's effective area to nearly 70 acres. The comprehensive redevelopment project, estimated at around ₹20 crore, also includes the construction of two inlets to channel floodwater from nearby waterbodies, including Nacharam Lake.

To improve flood management, an upgraded outlet system has also been developed, enabling excess water to flow safely into the Musi River once the lake reaches its full capacity.

Beyond water conservation and flood mitigation, the project is designed to create a vibrant public space for residents. Development plans include a walking track, a strengthened main bund, a children's play area, and an open gym, offering recreational facilities alongside environmental restoration.

Officials said Uppal Nallacheruvu, one of the major lakes being restored under the first phase of HYDRAA's lake rejuvenation programme, is expected to become an important urban ecological asset and a popular leisure destination for the people of Hyderabad.
