The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) is stepping up efforts to restore Kapra Lake, with nearly 60% of the ₹35-crore project completed. The initiative aims to revive the lake's ecological significance, improve its ability to manage rainwater and transform the surrounding area into a welcoming public space. Alongside infrastructure improvements, the restoration focuses on protecting biodiversity and creating a sustainable environment for residents and wildlife.

Covering 112.80 acres within its Full Tank Level (FTL) boundary, Kapra Lake has long been an important natural asset for the surrounding communities. Recognised among the wetlands identified by the Central Government, the waterbody supports ecological balance and provides a habitat for more than 470 migratory bird species arriving from Australia, Europe and other parts of the world. Its restoration is expected to help preserve this natural diversity while improving the lake's overall condition.

The project has also received support from local farmers, who have voluntarily offered to contribute to the lake's conservation. Inspired by HYDRAA's restoration initiatives, the farmers have agreed to make 70 acres of land within the FTL limits available for the development works. They met the HYDRAA Commissioner and submitted a letter conveying their consent, marking a significant contribution towards the restoration effort.

Kapra Lake is among 14 waterbodies being developed in the second phase of HYDRAA's lake restoration programme. The work is designed to protect the natural ecosystem rather than focus solely on beautification. Desilting operations are underway to remove accumulated sediment and increase the lake's water storage capacity. These measures are expected to improve groundwater recharge and help reduce flooding risks during periods of heavy rainfall.

The project also seeks to restore suitable habitats for fish, birds, amphibians and other aquatic life, strengthening the lake's ecological role.

Infrastructure improvements include a walking track around the lake, sturdy fencing and upgraded inlet and outlet systems. Preventive measures are also being incorporated to protect the lake from future encroachments.

Once completed, the restored waterbody is expected to offer residents a peaceful setting for morning walks and evening outings with their families. Through the initiative, HYDRAA aims to combine environmental conservation, floodwater management and improved public amenities, ensuring that Kapra Lake remains a valuable ecological resource for the surrounding neighbourhoods.
