Hyderabad to Induct 1,085 Electric Buses in Major Green Mobility Push

Hyderabad is set to strengthen its transition toward sustainable urban mobility as the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) moves to induct 1,085 electric buses from Olectra Greentech Limited through EVEY Trans Pvt. Ltd. The procurement, confirmed through a Letter of Intent , represents one of the largest additions to the city’s zero-emission public transport fleet and reinforces Hyderabad’s growing reputation as a leader in green mobility .

The initiative reflects the state government’s broader strategy to modernize public transport while addressing urban pollution and climate challenges. Chief minister Revanth Reddy has emphasized positioning Hyderabad at the forefront of sustainable mobility by accelerating electrification of transit systems, lowering carbon emissions , and promoting clean energy adoption. Replacing diesel-powered buses with electric alternatives is expected to significantly reduce air pollution, curb noise levels, and improve overall urban livability.

The buses are being sanctioned under the Centre’s PM e-Drive programme , implemented by Convergence Energy Services Limited (CESL) , which aims to accelerate adoption of electric public transport across Indian cities. The deployment will be focused within Hyderabad, strengthening a zero-emission transit ecosystem and supporting India’s broader climate commitments.

Hyderabad has already emerged as a key market for electric buses, with TGSRTC progressively expanding its EV fleet to serve high-density residential areas, commercial hubs, and IT corridors. The shift toward electric mobility is also expected to reduce operational costs over time, as electric buses typically require lower maintenance and energy expenses compared with diesel fleets.

Under the new order, Olectra will supply 12-metre low-floor buses in both air-conditioned and non-air-conditioned variants. Designed for Indian road conditions, the buses feature advanced air suspension systems for improved ride comfort and stability. Powered by lithium-ion battery packs , they can travel more than 250 kilometres on a single charge and support rapid charging cycles, enabling efficient high-frequency urban operations. Accessibility features, including designated wheelchair spaces , have been incorporated to make public transport more inclusive.

Olectra Greentech, a leading manufacturer of electric commercial vehicles in India, has deployed thousands of electric vehicles nationwide and continues to expand its production capabilities under the Make in India initiative. The company has logged hundreds of millions of green kilometres, contributing to reduced fossil fuel consumption and improved urban air quality. In addition to electric buses, it is also developing electric tipper vehicles to support sustainable infrastructure development.

Transport planners and environmental experts note that large-scale electrification of bus fleets plays a critical role in reducing greenhouse gases, improving air quality, and enhancing commuter comfort. With quieter operation, modern amenities, and smoother rides, electric buses are expected to improve passenger experience while supporting long-term sustainability goals.

The induction of these buses marks a significant milestone in Hyderabad’s journey toward a cleaner, smarter, and more efficient public transport system, strengthening the city’s vision of a sustainable and future-ready mobility network.
