Hyderabad to be developed as a “Quantum City,” says Minister Sridhar Babu

The Telangana government has unveiled a comprehensive plan to transform Hyderabad into a “Quantum City,” aiming to position the state as a global leader in quantum technologies and advanced digital systems.

IT and Industries Minister Sridhar Babu, speaking at the Quantum-Powered Economy Strategy event held at IIIT-Hyderabad, said that quantum technology will be as transformative in the 21st century as electricity and the internet were in previous decades. Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka also attended the event.

Sridhar Babu noted that the state has a clear long-term vision to strengthen Telangana’s leadership in artificial intelligence, quantum computing, quantum communication, cybersecurity, and life-sciences innovation. The new strategy focuses on boosting research infrastructure, developing high-end talent, and promoting cutting-edge work in sensing, cryptographic security, and other quantum applications.

According to a statement from the minister’s office, the framework is not just a state policy document but a national-level roadmap meant to guide India’s engagement with quantum science and technology.

As part of this strategy, the government will set up a dedicated Center of Excellence in Quantum Technologies, which will serve as a national benchmark for research, testing, and advanced skill development. The center will also support deep-tech startups and emerging tech companies.

Starting next financial year, the government will roll out a Fund of Funds program through this center to promote innovation-driven enterprises in the quantum and deep-tech sectors.

Sridhar Babu also announced new mechanisms to strengthen industry-government collaboration. Senior officials will interact with industry representatives every week through an “Industry Day,” and ministers will hold monthly consultations with business leaders to address operational challenges and design sector-specific growth strategies.

The event was attended by the CEO of NITI Aayog and several other dignitaries.
