A protest was held in Hyderabad on Sunday after an egg was allegedly thrown near a Goddess Durga idol immersion procession in the early hours, prompting police to register a case and take one suspect into custody.

The incident occurred at around 2 am within the limits of Madannapet Police Station, when the procession was passing through a lane. The egg fell near the procession, a police official said.

Participants in the procession and some local residents staged a protest following the incident. Senior police officials visited the spot and spoke with the procession organisers to assess the situation.

Police registered a case under Section 299 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The provision concerns deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage the religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs.

One suspect was taken into custody, and police are examining CCTV footage as part of the investigation. Officials have not disclosed further details about the suspect or established a motive for the alleged act.

Police said the situation in the area remained peaceful following the protest. They appealed to the public not to spread rumours while the investigation was underway.

The inquiry is focused on establishing the circumstances surrounding the alleged egg-throwing incident during the procession. Police have not announced any further findings so far.
