The Hyderabad police have intensified their special drive against the sale and use of banned Chinese manja across the city, seizing large quantities of the illegal kite string in recent days. The crackdown is aimed at curbing the serious threat posed by Chinese manja to the environment, birds and human life .

Between January 8 and 11 , the police seized 2,150 bobbins worth about ₹43 lakh in just four days. In connection with this illegal trade, 29 cases were registered and 57 persons were arrested , police officials said.

The figures for the past one month present an even more alarming picture. During this period, police registered 132 cases and seized 8,376 bobbins valued at ₹1.68 crore across the city. So far, 200 people have been arrested . The police made it clear that there would be no leniency in cases involving the illegal sale, storage, transportation or use of Chinese manja.

Every year, several birds are injured or killed due to Chinese manja, while two-wheeler riders and children face serious risks , leading to accidents and injuries. Keeping public safety and environmental protection in mind, the government has imposed a complete ban on this dangerous kite string.

The police warned that strict legal action , including possible imprisonment, would be taken against violators. Ahead of the Sankranti festival , the Hyderabad police appealed to the public to use only permitted and safe kite strings and celebrate the festival in a responsible manner .
