The Hyderabad Metro Rail Project , India’s largest public–private partnership in the transport sector, has run into serious trouble with Larsen & Toubro (L&T) expressing its intention to exit the venture.

In a recent letter, L&T highlighted its strained relationship with the state government , citing lack of financial support despite repeated requests. The company noted that the project has been facing significant fiscal stress , worsened by mounting operational costs and insufficient assistance to keep it sustainable.

The Hyderabad Metro, inaugurated in 2017, was envisioned as a world-class urban transport solution, easing congestion and catering to lakhs of commuters daily. However, post-pandemic ridership fluctuations, combined with financial burdens, have left the project struggling.

With L&T signaling its exit, the future of the ₹20,000+ crore metro rail project remains uncertain. The state government is now expected to explore alternatives, including taking over operations or seeking a new private partner.
