Hyderabad Launches ORR-Wide Fire Safety Drive After Nampally Blaze

Following the fatal fire at a Nampally furniture showroom on January 24, 2026 , which claimed five lives , Hyderabad authorities have launched a citywide fire safety enforcement drive within the Outer Ring Road (ORR) limits . The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Asset Protection Agency (HYDRAA) , in coordination with the Telangana Fire Services Department , GHMC , and electricity officials , is inspecting high-risk commercial, institutional, and residential buildings to prevent similar tragedies. Preliminary investigations revealed that the fire was triggered by a suspected electrical short circuit , while illegal storage of combustible materials such as rexine, mattresses, furniture, and chemicals in basement levels and unauthorized rooms housing a watchman’s family worsened the tragedy. Escape routes were blocked or sealed , trapping occupants, and the building was declared highly hazardous , highlighting serious lapses in fire safety norms.

In response to this and other major fires within ORR limits, Sri Vikram Singh Mann, IPS, Director General of Fire, Disaster Response, Emergency and Civil Defence Department , instructed officials to conduct intense inspections on a war footing basis . The inspections focus on illegal cellar usage, blocked staircases or ramps, and storage of excessive materials beyond display purposes . Officials have been directed to strictly enforce compliance , ensuring fire safety codes are followed and that fire safety systems, extinguishers, and sprinklers are functional . The inspections began on January 28, 2026 , and so far 70 establishments including commercial, mercantile, mixed-use, hospitals, institutions, malls, and multiplexes have been checked. Owners, tenants, and employees are being sensitized about fire safety precautions.

Official data shows that 2025 was one of the deadliest years for fire incidents in Telangana , with 8,861 fire distress and rescue calls, 163 fatalities, and property losses exceeding ₹879 crore , including major tragedies like the Gulzar Houz fire (17 deaths) and Sigachi Industry blast (54 deaths) . Fire officials cited electrical failures, negligence, heatwave-related stress on electrical systems, and regulatory gaps as key reasons behind the rising incidents. Authorities have warned of strict action , including power disconnection and criminal proceedings , for violators. The ongoing drive aims to prevent further fire tragedies, enforce safety norms, and strengthen fire and life safety awareness among building owners and managements across Hyderabad .
