Hyderabad Fuel Panic Sparks ‘No Stock’ Rush as Global Oil Tensions Rise
Hyderabad is witnessing widespread concern over fuel availability as several petrol pumps across the city have begun displaying “No Stock” boards , leading to long queues and anxious commuters. The situation, which intensified over the past few days, is being linked to global energy disruptions triggered by escalating tensions in the Middle East. However, officials insist that there is no real shortage and attribute the crisis largely to panic buying .
The ongoing conflict involving Iran and Israel has unsettled global oil markets, raising fears of supply disruptions through critical routes like the Strait of Hormuz , a vital corridor for global crude transport. With nearly 20 percent of the world’s oil passing through this route, even minor disturbances have pushed prices upward and strained supply chains. India, which depends heavily on crude imports, is particularly vulnerable to such geopolitical shocks.
On the ground, areas such as Uppal, Mallapur, Ghatkesar, and Attapur have reported temporary fuel unavailability, forcing some petrol stations to suspend operations briefly. Motorists are being forced to travel between fuel stations, often waiting for hours to refill. According to petroleum dealers, nearly 20–30% of outlets experienced temporary disruptions due to delayed supplies, increased transportation costs, and logistical challenges.
The impact has extended beyond fuel stations. Auto-rickshaw drivers have begun charging higher fares, often exceeding meter rates, citing increased fuel and gas prices. Daily commuters, including office workers and students, are facing mounting transportation costs. Meanwhile, several hotels and restaurants are reportedly adding a “gas surcharge” to bills, passing on the burden of rising LPG prices to customers.
Despite the visible strain, Hyderabad Police Commissioner C.V. Anand (Sajjanar) has categorically denied any fuel or gas shortage in the city. He stated that adequate stocks of petrol, diesel, and LPG are available and that supply chains remain intact . According to him, misinformation surrounding possible shortages has triggered panic buying, with people rushing to fuel stations and hoarding fuel in containers. This sudden surge in demand has led to temporary stock-outs at certain outlets.
Experts note that while the global oil situation remains uncertain, the local crisis in Hyderabad is largely demand-driven rather than supply-driven. They caution that panic buying can disrupt otherwise stable systems and worsen the situation artificially.
Authorities have urged citizens to avoid hoarding and practice responsible consumption . They have also assured that continuous monitoring and coordination with oil companies are underway to ensure smooth distribution. While the immediate situation is expected to normalize soon, the broader impact of global energy volatility may continue to influence fuel prices and consumer costs in the coming weeks.
