Hyderabad Celebrates Grand Balkampet Yellamma Kalyana Mahotsavam

The annual Kalyana Mahotsavam of Goddess Balkampet Yellamma, one of Telangana's most revered deities, was celebrated with grandeur and deep religious fervour in Hyderabad on Tuesday. Thousands of devotees from across the state thronged the historic temple to witness the celestial wedding of the goddess, while ministers, legislators and other dignitaries participated in the traditional rituals. Organised by the Telangana Endowments Department, the event marked one of the major spiritual highlights of the ongoing Ashada Bonalu festival.

On behalf of the Telangana government, Transport Minister Ponnam Prabhakar and Endowments Minister Konda Surekha presented Pattu Vastralu (silk robes) to the deity and performed special prayers in accordance with temple customs. The ministers were welcomed with traditional temple honours by priests and officials, who offered them theertham, prasadam and Vedic blessings.

Among the prominent attendees were Geetha Reddy, wife of Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, Kavya Reddy, wife of Union Minister G. Kishan Reddy, Government Whip Addanki Dayakar with his family, and MLAs Danam Nagender, Talasani Srinivas Yadav and Naveen Yadav.

Speaking on the occasion, Konda Surekha described participating in the sacred ceremony as a spiritually enriching experience. She said it was a privilege to offer silk robes to the goddess along with her daughter, Sushmita Patel. The minister added that the Varuna Yagnas and special prayers organised by the Endowments Department across Telangana had been blessed with abundant rainfall, expressing hope that the showers would ensure agricultural prosperity, improve livelihoods and bring peace and happiness to every household.

She also prayed for the continued progress of Telangana under the leadership of Chief Minister Revanth Reddy and reiterated the government's commitment to preserving and enhancing the prominence of the Balkampet Yellamma Temple.

Dedicated to Goddess Yellamma (Renuka Devi), the centuries-old temple is among Hyderabad's most significant pilgrimage centres. It is renowned for its unique 'Jala Durga' idol, which is partially submerged in a natural spring inside the sanctum, attracting devotees throughout the year. The annual Yellamma Kalyanam, celebrated during the Bonalu festival, is one of the temple's most important religious events, with the state government traditionally offering silk robes to the deity on behalf of the people of Telangana.

Authorities made extensive arrangements for the celebrations, including drinking water, uninterrupted power supply, medical services, security, traffic management and special darshan facilities. Dedicated assistance was also provided for children, senior citizens, persons with disabilities and Shiva Sathulu. Even after the Kalyana Mahotsavam concluded, devotees continued to arrive at the temple in large numbers to seek the blessings of the goddess.
