Hyd to tackle contaminated water with robotic checks: HMWSSB launches special drive

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has launched a special initiative to address the city’s long-standing issue of contaminated water supply. The board aims to bring water contamination complaints down to “zero” using advanced technology and data-driven strategies, ensuring safe drinking water for all residents, said HMWSSB Managing Director Ashok Reddy.

As part of the initiative, the board conducted a comprehensive analysis of complaints received over the past two years. Using data from the Metro Customer Care system, they identified problem areas, including sections prone to pipe leaks, aging pipelines, and mixing of sewage with the water supply.

Based on this analysis, old and deteriorated pipelines across the city have been scheduled for complete replacement within two months. Special teams have been set up to monitor the pipeline network and respond quickly to any emerging issues in the field.

To accurately detect the root causes of contamination, HMWSSB is deploying advanced robotic pipe inspection cameras. This technology allows engineers to examine the inside of pipelines directly, identifying leaks, cracks, and any contamination from sewage. Immediate repairs can then be carried out at the affected spots, preventing contaminated water from reaching homes.

Officials expressed confidence that this special drive will ensure a continuous supply of clean, safe drinking water across Hyderabad. “Eliminating water contamination complaints entirely and protecting public health is the primary goal of this initiative,” Ashok Reddy said.
