Hyd launches ‘CLAP for Children’ initiative to build a Child-Safe City
The Government of Telangana on Thursday unveiled a major city-wide initiative titled ‘CLAP for Children’ (Child Life, Advancement, and Protection), aimed at ensuring child safety, health, and wellbeing across Hyderabad. The project has been launched in collaboration with UNICEF and the Hyderabad District Administration , marking a milestone in child-focused governance.
Cross-Department Collaboration
The initiative brings together a wide network of government departments, statutory bodies, and community groups. Key stakeholders include the Women and Child Development Department, Police, Health, Education, Labour, Social Welfare, GHMC, Panchayat Raj, and Disaster Management authorities . Their coordinated action is designed to build a protective ecosystem for every child in the city.
Tackling Safety Challenges
With Hyderabad facing rising concerns over drug abuse, bullying, eve-teasing, and unsafe commuting , the project prioritizes preventive measures and active community engagement. Vigilance committees and child protection cells will be established to monitor risks, track incidents, and ensure accountability. The program also emphasizes direct child participation , encouraging young voices to shape policies affecting their lives.
Training and Capacity Building
Another major pillar of CLAP is capacity-building for frontline workers , including teachers, health professionals, police officers, and social workers. Regular training sessions will equip them with child-friendly and trauma-informed practices , ensuring timely interventions and compassionate care for children in need.
A Model for India
Speaking at the launch, state ministers reaffirmed Telangana’s commitment to make Hyderabad a model ‘Child-Safe City’ and set a precedent for other cities across India. UNICEF representatives praised the government’s proactive stance, noting that such integrated efforts are crucial to addressing complex urban child protection challenges.
The launch of CLAP for Children reflects a forward-looking vision for Hyderabad , aiming not only to protect children from immediate risks but also to empower them for a safer, healthier future.
