Husnabad to Be Merged with Karimnagar District: Minister Ponnam Prabhakar

January 11, 2026

Telangana Transport and BC Welfare Minister Ponnam Prabhakar has reiterated that the Husnabad Assembly constituency will be merged back into Karimnagar district , stating that Husnabad was forcibly included in Siddipet district during the 2016 district reorganisation and that locals have been demanding realignment for years. Speaking in Husnabad on January 12 , the minister said the government would act in line with public aspirations when it undertakes a scientific district boundary review in the future, and ensure Husnabad’s inclusion in Karimnagar as part of planned administrative corrections.

The issue has resurfaced strongly in recent weeks after indications that the State may consider a scientific rationalisation of district boundaries , reopening old debates over how constituencies were mapped during Telangana’s 2016 restructuring . Husnabad has historically been linked to the undivided Karimnagar region, but its attachment to Siddipet sparked repeated representations seeking a return. The debate has also widened amid rumours of possible district consolidation , with political chatter even suggesting that Siddipet district’s status could be revisited , prompting sharp political reactions and warnings of protests—highlighting that any boundary corrections could quickly turn into a major political flashpoint.

Ponnam also recalled that he had already raised the matter with the Chief Minister, and said the CM had earlier given a clear public assurance at Ambedkar Circle about merging Husnabad with Karimnagar. Stressing that such commitments would not be forgotten, the minister said the final decision would be taken during the government’s formal, research-based boundary corrections process, positioning the issue not just as a local demand but as part of a broader statewide administrative review.

Later, the minister carried out a field inspection of the Gouravelli Project Right Canal in Akkannapet mandal , travelling along the canal stretch from Gouravelli to Mallaram (around 16.5 km) to assess ground realities. While much of the construction has been completed, he flagged key pending issues including unfinished bridges needed for village movement, blockages at certain points , and heavy growth of trees and shrubs obstructing water flow. He directed officials to remove vegetation immediately, complete bridge works on priority, repair problem stretches and ensure uninterrupted irrigation water supply to farmers.

The Gouravelli Project continues to carry both economic and political weight in the constituency, as the irrigation scheme is widely seen as a critical lifeline for agriculture and a credibility test for the government’s ability to deliver last-mile benefits. Overall, the minister’s Husnabad statement has become more than an administrative assurance, feeding into a larger Telangana debate over district boundary rationalisation , the future status of Siddipet district , and growing public demands to restore older regional linkages such as Husnabad–Karimnagar .
