A tragic chain of events in Barabanki has left an entire village in shock after a 22-year-old man allegedly died by suicide nine days after his wife also allegedly took her own life following a domestic dispute .

Police said Mithun Rawat, a resident of Rahimabad village under the Jaidpur police station area, was found hanging from a mango tree on Thursday nearly one kilometre away from his house. His family had begun searching for him after he left home around 7 am and did not return.

According to investigators and villagers, Rawat had been struggling emotionally since the death of his wife , Shivkumari (20), who allegedly died by suicide inside their home on May 5. Police said the woman had taken the extreme step after a domestic quarrel, though the exact nature of the dispute is still under investigation.

Villagers told police that Mithun became withdrawn and deeply distressed after losing his wife. Unable to cope with the grief, guilt, social pressure, and emotional trauma surrounding her death, he allegedly ended his life as well, police said.

While some in the village described the incident as a reflection of “deep love” between the couple, mental health experts often caution that such deaths are more closely linked to emotional breakdown and psychological distress rather than romantic devotion.

Police reached the spot after receiving information and sent Mithun’s body for post-mortem examination. Further legal proceedings are underway in both cases.
