Humanitarian diplomacy: India sends relief to flood and quake hit Afghanistan
India on Sunday dispatched a fresh consignment of humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan , extending support to communities affected by recent floods and an earthquake. The aid delivery is part of India’s ongoing Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief (HADR) operations, a framework used to provide emergency support during natural disasters and crises.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the relief package includes essential supplies such as kitchen sets, hygiene kits, plastic sheets, tarpaulins, and sleeping bags . These materials are aimed at helping displaced families meet immediate needs such as shelter, sanitation, and basic living requirements.
External Affairs Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said India remains committed to supporting the Afghan people during this challenging period. “At this time of hardship being faced by Afghan people due to recent floods and earthquake, India delivers HADR materials,” he stated, reiterating that India stands in solidarity with the people of Afghanistan.
In recent weeks, Afghanistan has faced a series of natural disasters that have compounded an already fragile humanitarian situation. Heavy seasonal rains triggered flash floods in several provinces, particularly in the northern and western regions, damaging homes, agricultural land, and critical infrastructure. Separately, a moderate earthquake struck parts of the country, causing structural damage in vulnerable rural areas. While the full extent of casualties and destruction is still being assessed, local authorities and aid agencies have reported significant displacement and loss of livelihoods.
While the government confirmed the dispatch of relief supplies, no official details have been released regarding the exact quantity or monetary value of the aid in this specific consignment . However, India has historically provided substantial humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, including food grains, medicines, and disaster relief materials in multiple phases.
India’s HADR efforts form a key pillar of its foreign policy, particularly in responding to crises in neighbouring and regional countries. The latest assistance underscores New Delhi’s continued engagement and humanitarian commitment to Afghanistan despite ongoing challenges in the region.
