Birdwatchers have reported the sighting of at least two unfamiliar bird species at Pong Dam Lake in Kangra district , raising the possibility of new additions to the wetland’s rich avifaunal record. Officials said the species are yet to be formally identified by the Himachal Pradesh Wildlife Department .

According to the department, the sightings were reported by birders visiting the lake , though no specific birding group has been officially named so far. Following the information, a wildlife team has been deputed to the site to verify and scientifically identify the birds before recording them in official registers.

Pong Dam Lake, a Ramsar wetland of international importance, is a major winter destination for migratory birds from foreign countries. “Every year during winter, thousands of birds migrate here, with bar-headed geese from Siberia being among the most prominent visitors,” said Saroj Bhai Patel, Conservator of Forests, Wildlife Circle, Dharamshala. He added that any newly identified species is formally entered into departmental records after due verification.

Over the years, Pong Dam has emerged as one of north India’s most important bird habitats. Recent censuses have recorded 85 to over 110 species annually , with bird numbers often exceeding one lakh during peak winter months , reflecting the lake’s high biodiversity.

Officials said identification of the newly reported birds is pending as initial information came from field sightings, which must be corroborated through detailed observation and expert confirmation to avoid misidentification.

While many species visiting Pong Dam, including bar-headed geese, are not globally endangered, several migratory birds fall under protected categories in India. Conservationists note that wetlands like Pong Dam face challenges from fluctuating water levels due to dam operations, human disturbance, pollution, invasive vegetation and climate-related changes, underscoring the need for careful habitat management.

The Wildlife Department has announced that its annual migratory bird census will be conducted by the end of January , coinciding with peak winter arrivals.

Beyond conservation, Pong Dam Lake has gained prominence as a key birdwatching and eco-tourism destination , attracting nature enthusiasts and tourists from across the country during the winter season, officials said.
