Honda gears up for major expansion in India: Ten new models by 2030 to drive growth and market share
In a decisive push to reclaim its position in one of the world’s fastest-growing automobile markets, Japanese auto major Honda Motor Co. Ltd. has unveiled plans to launch ten new models including seven SUVs in India by 2030. The move marks a strategic shift for the company, which is looking to tap into India’s booming demand for passenger vehicles and strengthen its brand presence across urban and semi-urban centers.
A Renewed Focus on India’s Expanding Market
Honda has identified India as a top-priority growth market, alongside the United States and Japan. The company’s new strategy aims to capture a larger slice of India’s passenger vehicle market, which is projected to grow from around 43 lakh units at present to nearly 60 lakh units annually by 2030.
Speaking about the company’s roadmap, Toshihiro Mibe, Director, President and Representative of Honda Motor Co. Ltd., said that the automaker is finalising its long-term strategies for India in response to shifting global dynamics and the rise of Chinese manufacturers.
SUVs Take the Lead
SUVs continue to dominate Indian roads, with growing preference among young and family buyers alike. Recognising this trend, Honda will focus heavily on the SUV segment, introducing a mix of global premium models and locally manufactured vehicles tailored for Indian consumers. The company has already seen encouraging traction with its recently launched Honda Elevate, and plans to build on that success with more offerings in different price brackets.
Expanding Footprint and Target Customers
Honda currently operates more than 300 dealerships and showrooms across major cities including Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad, Pune, Ahmedabad, and Kolkata, as well as Tier-II markets such as Coimbatore, Lucknow, Chandigarh, and Indore.
As part of its expansion plan, the company is expected to deepen its presence in Tier-II and Tier-III cities, where car ownership is rising rapidly due to improved infrastructure and increasing disposable income.
Honda’s upcoming models will be aimed at a diverse range of buyers from young professionals and urban families seeking feature-rich compact SUVs, to premium customers looking for high-end global models. The automaker also plans to strengthen its after-sales service network, a key factor influencing purchase decisions in India’s competitive market.
Driving Future Growth
Industry analysts believe Honda’s renewed focus on India could significantly boost competition in the mid-size SUV and premium hatchback categories, currently dominated by brands like Hyundai, Kia, Maruti Suzuki, and Tata Motors.
With India’s vehicle market expected to contribute substantially to global sales over the next decade, Honda’s latest move signals a long-term commitment to localization, innovation, and consumer-centric design.
“India is not just an emerging market, it's becoming the centre of global automotive growth,” a senior industry expert said. “Honda’s new lineup and localization plans could help it regain the strong market share it once enjoyed.”
As the company refines its India playbook, the next five years will be critical not only for Honda’s growth trajectory but also for the shape of India’s evolving automotive landscape.
